POMPTON LAKES The federal Environmental Protection Agency is close to approving DuPonts cleanup plan of toxic metals and chemicals contaminating Pompton Lake.
A decision on the scope of the chemical giant's dredging permit will be made by late summer or early fall, agency officials said before a crowd of 25 residents at an information session in the high school gymnasium this afternoon.
The cleanup, which was previously planned to begin in March for the mercury-laden, 26-acre Acid Brook Delta, has been rescheduled to begin in 2013. Later this year, the EPA will hold another public meeting to hear concerns about the technical aspects of the cleanup.
The agency said it heard and addressed concerns from members of the community and officials with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, who earlier this year argued that DuPont's plan needed to be much larger to protect wildlife.
