Great Lakes Fish Are Moving North With Climate Change, But Can They Adapt Fast Enough?

By Aaron Martin on November 1, 2023

Around 14,00 to 9,000 years ago, the Great Lakes were formed as the glaciers retreated and melted, leaving these large, ecologically empty areas that fishes colonized.

These fish moved northward, eastward, and westward and colonized the Great Lakes.

Through rivers that we don't have anymore through lakes that we don't have anymore… into these newly formed lakes that were ecologically open, that had habitat and new food resources.

My research in Ontario as a postdoc was looking at changes in the distribution of freshwater fish.

....faced by ALL migrating species as they search for suitable habitat in a quickly changing ecology.

Not to mention that the habitat microclimates themselves will also be phasing through numerous conditions as those changes occur, and won't simply shift into slightly warmer, drier, windier, cooler, wetter, etc, etc, conditions.

It will be ecological chaos for decades and decades, and although that sounds like a long time, it's nowhere near long enough for biological adaptation and evolution to occur in the species who will need to adapt to survive.
