That human well-being is connected to the welfare of other species - maybe only in a roundabout way. But still...

A species too crass to not care about these things when they are abstract issues, will in the long run shoot itself in the foot. Factory farming will probably produce the next major pandemic..maybe not but it is at least a distinct possibility.

I am no new-ager-I don't believe in karma (a horrible judgemental, self-righteous notion). I am a scientist/atheist. But I do disapprove of crassness and cruelty even when there is no blowback.

Usually however, when things become bad we become more cruel and stupid......
