Rare white orca among transient killer whales spotted in Washington

Orcas have been showing off in Puget Sound waters this month — including J Pod orcas, transient killer whales and a rare white orca.

Tl’uk, the rare white whale, is part if a Bigg's transient killer whale family, known for eating marine mammals and visiting the region. The group frequents the Salish Sea and was spotted Saturday in the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Typically, Bigg's orcas travel in groups of about four to seven whales. On Saturday, however, Captain Carl Williams of Island Adventures Whale Watching reported seeing at least 30 individuals were seen spread out over several miles, from about 10 different orca families.

The sighting was described as unique but not unexpected in an Island Adventures news release. Bigg's orcas have had a population boom of 90 births since 2012.

I've been as close as ten feet to Orca's in the wild and been about that to a gray? Whale near St Paul Island back in 81

I've never even heard of an albino Orca before, that would be a bucket list item for me

I saw an albino Dall Porpoise out in the Bering in 1984 riding our bow wave on the crab boat I was on, it was nighttime and there was at least seven others normal coloring with it

It had grey dappling on its head area but was solid white otherwise

The Dall normally has coloring very similar to the Orca

I hope they show it on the local news
