Walmart Gives Up Replacing Store Cashiers With Machines

Walmart Gives Up Replacing Store Cashiers With Machines

That’s according to a recent Bloomberg report, which reveals that the retail giant is getting rid of “Mobile Scan & Go” technology, which allowed customers to ring up their own purchases.

Apparently, the technology didn’t work for Walmart's customers. "It took Walmart almost a year to figure out what the rest of us already know: you can't convince customers to do the job of a cashier just because you don't want to pay for the work, especially when eliminating cashiers doesn't result in more convenient shopping,” says Making Change at Walmart (MCAW) director, Randy Parraz.

Meanwhile, the new technology hasn’t helped Walmart’s operating margins—see tables.

cashiers and my WAIT there will just increase. I have no problem with Scan and Go's especially when I am just getting one or two items. I hate having to stand behind three carts full of groceries just to buy a carton of milk.

Sorry, but i do go there. The pet food prices absolutely slaughter PetSmart, PetCo, and the local grocery stores.

Those Scan and Go areas just opened up a month ago, here.

Are rampant at self-check stations, I hear. Like putting in the code for bananas and getting the same weight in organic raspberries for the banana price. No, I have never done that.

Prepackaged produce. Add the barcode (eventually RFID when price gets low enough).

Target Stores have been the innovator for Retailing, both hard goods and soft goods. Have not seen a self serve Check Out in any one of their Stores for almost five years. Why,easy to figure out that. We call it shrink. Theft is also used as a descriptor. So easy to compromise these systems. And the dollar cost of a human running a register is cheaper than the dollar amount of stolen merchandise.

Watched a shopper at one of our local Wal-Mart stores last week using her I-Phone Scanner. Look like a great idea until,I saw her scan one item and put two of the same item in her carry basket. Sorry,do not feel sorry for WalMart, they created their own nightmare. And it is going to take more than minimum wage door shakers to stop their theft.

Seems there was a charge for a bag if your items didn't meet a mini,um. It was poorly explained.
