OTTAWALabour Minister Lisa Raitt moved Wednesday to be in a position to pass back-to-work legislation if the strike continues at Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd.
Raitt said the government would like to see a negotiated end to the strike. We believe that a deal at the table is the best deal that can happen, Raitt told reporters after giving notice in Parliament that the Conservatives might table a bill ordering an end to the strike.
She warned that the Harper government will take action if it believes a prolonged strike is damaging the economy. If the work stoppage continues, it could cost $540 million a week in lost economic activity, Raitt estimated.

More than 4,800 locomotive engineers, conductors and other CP Rail employees hit the picket lines on Wednesday after failing to reach a contract agreement, bringing freight operations on Canadas second-biggest railroad to a halt.
