The fundamentalists of the far right found God was very close to them in 1964. He gave them more money, more supporters, more publicity, and more influence in public life than ever before. Above all, he gave them a cause a cause so exciting, so challenging that it had to be providential; no other explanation would do. What did it matter that the cynics and scoffers and apostates called it "extremism," or "In your guts you know he's nuts." Yes, to be sure, the cause was centered on a person, but it was more than that. It was the reality that finally, right now, America had the chance to drive the traitors from the temple and reassert its rightful position as God's most favored nation. The cause was good, solid Christian Americanism, a return to the fundamentals. Now it was clear God was so generous in 1964; he wanted his people to use that money, publicity, and influence and to use it right away.
