Yankee troops writing home from the southern battlefields found themselves appalled by the stratification. The gap they saw between manor houses and hovels was a far cry from Lebanon, Pennsylvania, or Niles, Michigan. Some English observers, in turn, thought that southern independence made sense in part because the North and the South were close to being two different countries.
