U.S. high-speed trader sentenced to three years in jail for spoofing, fraud

A U.S. judge sentenced high-speed futures trader Michael Coscia to 3 years in prison on Wednesday, a lighter punishment than prosecutors had wanted for the first person criminally convicted of the manipulative trading practice of spoofing.

Coscia also was sentenced to three years of supervised release.

Prosecutors had asked the judge to jail Coscia, owner of New Jersey-based Panther Energy Trading, for as long as seven years and three months after he was convicted last year of spoofing and commodities fraud.

Coscia was accused of entering large orders into futures markets in 2011 that he never intended to execute. His goal, prosecutors said, was to lure other traders to markets by creating an illusion of demand so that he could make money on smaller trades, a practice known as spoofing.

Take the profit out of that 0.1 point they add or subtract from most trades out there, kill HFC off completely and most of the hedge funds with it.

Hedge funds make their money by skimming. That means they're taking money from everybody in the market at one time or another. It's too little to be noticed by individual traders but it adds up quickly. Oh, boy, does it add up.

HFT created liquidity in the market, allowing orders to be filled instantly.

Remove HFT, your orders will likely fill at different prices and not what you wanted.

Wow, he must have really pissed someone powerful off by stealing their money to even have charges brought against him -- let alone be convicted.
