Greeces former finance minister is facing the prospect of criminal charges and prison for allegedly hacking taxpayer accounts in preparation for the countrys exit from the euro while at the same time negotiating with European creditors for a new bailout.
The supreme court has referred the case of Yanis Varoufakis to parliament to vote on whether he should lose his immunity from prosecution.
All of those implicated face criminal charges ranging from breach of privacy to operating like a criminal gang with the intent of reverting to a different currency, judicial sources told The Times. Mr Varoufakis also faces charges of high treason and breach of duty which carry prison sentences of between five and 25 years.
Details of the secret plan to prepare for Grexit and debt default were divulged by Mr Varoufakis during a teleconference with investors on July 16, more than a week after he was resigned from the finance ministry. While in government, he remained a hard line opponent of surrendering to creditors demands for added austerity in exchange for more rescue bailout funds.
