Personally I'm all for any news coverage on the subject which spurns debate about the DP in the US regardless of gender, but I'd prefer to see more about the other 98.2%.

Have innocent inmates ever been executed?

There is no way to tell how many of the almost 1,400 people executed since 1976 may have been innocent. Courts do not generally entertain claims of innocence once the defendant is dead. Defense attorneys move on to other cases where clients' lives can still be saved. (see possible cases of those executed who might have been innocent).

Recently, the case of Cameron Willingham (pictured) has been in the news. He was convicted of murdering his three children by arson in a 1991 house fire. He was executed in 2004. A new report from a national arson expert, prepared for the Texas Forensic Science Commission, has concluded that the original investigation of Willingham's case was seriously flawed and could not support a finding of arson.

2. Pro-DP advocates right here on DU pretend the system is or can be perfect

They claim they support the DP in cases where absolute guilt can be determined which is an impossible standard. Police are fallible. Investigators are fallible. Witnesses are fallible. Prosecutors are fallible. Juries are fallible. Even willful confessions are fallible. So you don't even have a swiss cheese situation where all of these things must line up in order for the system to fail. It really only takes one of these things. There's no question the system already has and will continue to execute the innocent. Statistically the more people you execute, the more likely you are to get it wrong. Add to this a system which is both racist and sexist, doesn't serve society or even victims, and is more costly than the alternative. That's why the rest of the civilized world has abandoned it.
