A country music singer has been arrested in Brazil for allegedly killing his former girlfriend, whose body was found burned in her home last month.
João Malachias, 40, was taken into custody Sunday at a gas station in Ribeirão Preto, a city in the southeastern state of São Paulo. Police said he was attempting to flee to the nearby state of Goiás.
Police allege Malachias murdered Bruna Angleri, also 40, on September 27 at her condominium in the São Paulo city of Araras.
Angleri's mother told the Military Police she became concerned after not hearing from her daughter, went to the apartment and found her dead in her bed.
'Her face was completely deformed by fractures. She had a fractured rib,' Zuliani said, as quoted by Brazilian news outlet G1.
Malachias had a court order issued against him that prohibited contact with Angleri, a single mother.
He was interviewed by authorities following the incident and claimed his innocence and was released.
Authorities are waiting on the results of an autopsy to determine if she was still alive when she was set on fire.
The military police obtained a warrant Friday and nearly arrested him. But he led the on a high-speed chase along the highway and abandoned the vehicle before escaping through a sugar cane field.
