Mexico City — The Mexican government reported for the first time Wednesday that a body was spotted along the floating barrier that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott installed recently in the Rio Grande, across from Eagle Pass, Texas.

Mexico's Foreign Relations Department said authorities recovered the body but didn't know the person's identity or cause of death.

Many have warned about the danger the barrier poses because it's designed to make it more difficult for migrants to climb over or swim under it.

A Texas state trooper raised internal concerns about the barrier diverting migrants, including children, into parts of the Rio Grande where they're more likely to drown.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The Mexican government reported for the first time Wednesday that a body was spotted along the floating barrier that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott installed recently in the Rio Grande, across from Eagle Pass, Texas.

Mexico’s Foreign Relations Department said authorities were trying to recover the body, and did not know the person’s nationality or the cause of death.

Many had warned about the danger of the barrier, because it is designed to make it more difficult for migrants to climb over or swim under it.

The department said Mexico had warned about the risks posed by the bright orange, wrecking ball-sized buoys on the Rio Grande. It also claimed the barrier violates treaties regarding the use of the river, and violates Mexico’s sovereignty.

A dead body has been found "stuck" in the anti-migrant barriers installed by Texas authorities on the Rio Grande river.

The Mexican government on Wednesday said that a dead body has been spotted along the controversial floating barriers.

The bright orange, wrecking ball-sized buoys were recently installed by Texas authorities to stop migrants crossing into the United States.

What we know so far
US authorities informed Mexico that "they found the body of a lifeless person stuck in the southern part of the buoys" on the Rio Grande river, Mexico's Foreign Relations Department said in its statement.

Two bodies have been found stuck in the lines of orange buoys installed by Texas authorities in the Rio Grande along the U.S.-Mexico border, Mexican officials said.

The Texas Department of Public Safety notified the Mexican Consulate in Eagle Pass, Texas, on Wednesday afternoon that a person was found dead in the southern part of the floating barriers. Members of the Mexican National Institute of Migration's assistance unit, Grupos Beta, are spearheading efforts to recover the body, according to the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

"So far, the cause of death and nationality of the person is unknown," the ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

"We express our concern about the impact on the human rights and personal safety of migrants that these state policies will have, which go in the opposite direction to the close collaboration between our country and the federal government of the United States," the ministry added. "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to follow up on the case promptly through the Mexican Consulate in Eagle Pass, maintaining contact with the corresponding authorities in Mexico and the United States to obtain more information on what happened and to request that the necessary investigations be carried out."
