Naturally, not everyone eats garbage in Venezuela. Some people wait in line to get their kilo of "subsidized" bread!

(2,412 posts)It's awesome! There used to be two or three on every block. They used to be called, "la panaderia local".
First, these bakeries would buy flour from abroad, at wholesale prices. But Chavismo made the Bolivar worthless, and no one would take Bolivars. When a you paid a Chavista wholesaler (who knew the Chavista importer) to deliver 40 bags of flour, only 15 showed up. But you still paid for 40. Complain, and you'll get nothing next time.
Then Muduro told them that they must sell their bread at a profit loss. The bread would run out in a half hour of opening. But, they could sell the much sought after pastries and cakes that are very popular with ordinary Venezuelans, to make up for the losses.
Then Maduro told them that they must ONLY sell bread at a profit loss. And if they didn't ONLY sell bread, Maduro "nationalized" their bakery. Many just folded.
The ones that Maduro nationalized couldn't find bakers to work for The State. So, he turned over these bakeries to "El Pueblo"... loyal Chavistas who knew nothing about running a business, or "how to bake bread at a profit loss". Most of these bakeries were looted of anything of value, and sit empty... but at least the "business" is in the hands of "El Pueblo".
Now, most bread is imported from Columbia, Brazil or Panama. Corn meal (Venezuela used to export metric tons of it) for arepas (the national dish) must be imported. But because of Chavismo lackeys, they pay a "premium" to the Chavismo importers, who take their cut, who give it to the military (Chavista controlled) who take THEIR cut, who distribute it to Chavista wholesalers (see a pattern?) who distribute the paltry amount left to... Chavista supporters! The CLAP bag!
The lines seen above are for state subsidized food at Chavista food stores. You must be a holder of the proper card (are you a Chavista? Let me see your "peoples card"!) They have plenty of crap that nobody wants or needs. But toilet paper, bread, flour, corn meal, eggs, milk, feminine products, cooking oil... not so much.
