Is Venezuela on the brink of civil war?

Venezuela has for months been barrelling deeper into crisis, amid daily street protests, violence and an economic collapse that has left many struggling to survive.

Last weekend, a controversial vote was held that could irrevocably change the future of the oil-rich South American nation.

Here's a closer look at what's happening.

President Nicolas Maduro called the vote to elect an assembly to rewrite the constitution - a move he says will bring back stability to a country in chaos but which critics brand an authoritarian power grab. Voters were to elect 364 members, with 181 chosen by committees representing social sectors, including workers, farmers and indigenous people.
