Macri to Veto Bill That Would Stop Layoffs in Argentina

Macri to Veto Bill That Would Stop Layoffs in Argentina

Published 10 May 2016 (50 minutes ago)

At least 140,000 people have reportedly lost their jobs since President Mauricio Macri took office in December 2015.

President Mauricio Macri is promising to veto a bill to be considered Wednesday that would prohibit companies from firing employees for the next 180 days, state officials told the media on Tuesday.

Macri has criticized the bill on several occasions, but never clearly said if he would veto it.

However, Chief of Staff Marcos Peña and Interior Minister Rogelio Frigerio both confirmed he would use his veto power if Argentina's lower house approves the measure.

The bill, which would declare a “labor state of emergency,” has already been approved in the Senate, where the progressive opposition holds a majority.
