President to receive harsh document from Church leaders
President Mauricio Macri will meet with key Church officials from the Argentine Synod (CEA) tomorrow at the presidential residence at Olivos, a mere 24 hours ahead of the group publishing a document addressing the social challenges faced by Argentina and expected to be critical of Macris Lets Change (Cambiemos) administration.
Over the weekend, the Catholic priests Option for the Poor (Opción por los Pobres) group slammed Macris failure to sufficiently address the poverty crisis in Argentina and called the president a job-killer over recent labour policies which have caused mass sackings of workers clocked by unions as amounting to between 90,000 and 130,000 since Macris inauguration in December.
The CEA is expected to use the meeting primarily as an opportunity to extend an official invitation to Macri to attend the upcoming Eucharistic Congress, scheduled for June 16-19 in Tucumán province under the title Jesus Christ, Our Lord of History, an event Macri suggested he would attend after his recent encounter with the Archbishop of Tucumán Alfredo Zecca.
The Congress is also expected to tie in celebrations from the Bicentenery of Argentine Independence, and as such is timely with regards to the CEAs pending policy document due for publication this Thursday, which is entitled The Bicentennial: time for fraternal gathering of Argentines.
