Bolivia's President Evo Morales places a traditional Bolivian hat on Pope Francis' head during the second World Meeting of Popular Movements in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, Thursday, July 9, 2015.

SANTA CRUZ, Bolivia Pope Francis has cast himself as the spiritual and political leader of the worlds oppressed with his remarkable mea culpa for the sins and crimes of the Catholic Church against the indigenous peoples during the colonial conquest of the Americas.
. . .
Francis humbly begged forgiveness Thursday at a gathering of indigenous leaders in Bolivia in the presence of Bolivias first-ever indigenous president, Evo Morales, the climactic high of Francis weeklong South American tour.
In the speech, Francis noted that Latin American church leaders in the past had acknowledged that grave sins were committed against the native peoples of America in the name of God. St. John Paul II, for his part, apologized to the continents indigenous for the pain and suffering caused during the 500 years of the churchs presence in the Americas during a 1992 visit to the Dominican Republic.
. . .
I would also say, and here I wish to be quite clear, as was St. John Paul II: I humbly ask forgiveness, not only for the offenses of the church herself, but also for crimes committed against the native peoples during the so-called conquest of America, he said to applause from the crowd.

(12,161 posts)I wonder why the reporter felt the need to put quote marks around humbly. Either Francis made a humble apology or he made a proud filled non-apology. I go with the former. Great man Francis.
