Constitutional Court president resigns over bribery scandal

The president of Colombia’s Constitutional Court has resigned from the judicial body after two of his colleagues had accused him of corruption, the court announced on Thursday.

Now ex-magistrate Jorge Pretelt was accused of having asked $200 thousand from an oil company, promising that the court would revoke a multi-million-dollar fine.

On Wednesday, Pretelt announced he would step back for 30 days, but for his fellow magistrates this wasn’t enough.

“The magistrates again stressed the necessity of his departure from the presidency to Dr. Jorge Ignacio Pretelt, which he finally agreed to without any conditions in terms of time,” magistrate Maria Victoria Calle told press on behalf of the remaining eight members of the court.

The president’s resignation was unanimously agreed to with the exception of Pretelt himself who had called in sick for the vote.

A former state environmental commissioner charged a top Gov. Chris Christie staffer with having "elbowed" his way into a multi-billion-dollar settlement negotiation with Exxon Mobil.

Bradley Campbell, a former commissioner of the state's Department of Environmental Protection, wrote in an op-ed published today that the Christie administration's move to quietly settle an $8.9 billion lawsuit with Exxon Mobil over the pollution at two industrial sites came after a top administration official took over the settlement agreement.

"The decision by the administration of Gov. Chris Christie to settle an environmental lawsuit against Exxon Mobil Corporation for roughly three cents on the dollar after more than a decade of litigation is an embarrassment to law enforcement and good government," Campbell wrote.
