U.S. governments Radio and TV Marti call Cuban Cardinal Jaime Ortega a lackey
By William Booth, Published: May 5
MEXICO CITY Criticism of the leader of the Catholic Church in Cuba, who has been negotiating with the communist government to expand religious and political freedom, intensified last week when the head of Radio and TV Marti called the archbishop of Havana a lackey who is colluding with an oppressive regime.
The stinging editorial against Cardinal Jaime Ortega signed by Radio and TV Martis director, Carlos Garcia-Perez is significant because Marti is a U.S. government agency, with its board of directors appointed by the White House and its policies coordinated with the State Department to direct messages to Cubans.
Some analysts said the editorial could undermine Ortegas position in Cuba and they wondered whether it signaled a lack of support for the Churchs delicate position on the communist-run island.
Marti broadcasts, according to spokeswoman Lynne Weil, are editorially independent, although supported by U.S. taxpayer dollars. Their editorials, unless otherwise stated, represent the views of the broadcasters only and not necessarily those of the U.S. government.

(24,010 posts)...because it's supported by U.S. taxpayers and run out of the White House? What about the 'agencies of government'--the Corporate Press, and most especially the Washington Pciast--that don't need direct payment or direct control to print whatever Langley faxes over (or delivers in back alleys)? They do it, um...naturally.
Funnee.
Always, ALWAYS ask WHY the Pciast is publishing something, not just the contents and the corporate/war profiteer bias of the article but why it gets any cache in this rotten rag.
Some guesses:
Cardinal Ortega is giving the lie to CIA/Miami mafia propaganda that Cuba is a religiously repressed society, so they decided to trumpet Marti's word "lackey" to the world, on Marti's (the CIA's) behalf? (i.e., Marti has a very limited audience; the Pciast can get it out there.)
A warning to Cardinal Ortega? ("Some analysts say..." is one of the sneakiest corporate press techniques for giving the corporate view and promoting what the corporate rulers want, i.e., to put a lid on Cardinal Ortega; to "undermine" him)?
Tug-of-war within the Corporate Establishment between those who want to see a successful "Bay of Pigs" invasion--just bloodily take the place over on behalf of mafia hoteliers--and those who think that gradual corporatization can be had? The latter think Radio/TV Marti is antiquated, unconvincing and stupid? They get their licks in, against Radio/TV Marti, at the same time that they benefit from the blather about 'religion' and 'human rights'?
Maybe it ain't the CIA. Maybe it's the Vatican. They abhor "liberals," and, though they talk a propaganda line about 'human rights,' they squish liberals within their own ranks like so many cockroaches, recently including most of the Catholic nuns in the United States. THEY wanted to trumpet this slander against Cardinal Ortega (and alerted the Pciast to trumpet it or maybe even started the whole thing)?
To set the record straight, Cardinal Ortega is a peacemaker. He is not a goddamn tool of the Miami mafia, the CIA and our war profiteers--like too many Catholic bishops have been (including one in Argentina who okayed the torture and murder of pregnant leftist women but "rescued" their babies and "gave" them to fascists to raise). (Abominable bishops! Cowardly bishops! Greedy bishops! Prick-crazed bishops!) Cardinal Ortega seems not to be the "lackey" of the CIA or the Vatican (but he could be on the less violent side of the corporate tug-of-war about Cuba).
To further "divide and conquer" for their "narrative" about Obama, so that, when the time is deemed right for our next Bush Junta--after most of our people have been made to "forget" what the previous Bush Junta did--they can add up the tidbits about Obama being feckless (can't control Radio/TV Marti or anything else), being a "failure," blah, blah, blah? (This is not a nice tidbit about Obama's White House: either he is dissing this peacemaking bishop or he can't control those getting Federal welfare who are.)
Anyway, that's my advice. Take NOTHING in the Washington Pciast at face value. Not the least fact, not "Some analysts say..." and other tricks, nor the most sweeping narrations of goings on in the Imperial City. Look for the "black holes" where information should be. Look for the motives.

Edited to change "Bishop Ortega" to "Cardinal Ortega."
