Ecuador Hosts First Summit For Responsible Journalism

QUITO, June 12 (BERNAMA-NNN-PRENSA LATINA) - The Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil will host the first Summit for Responsible Journalism (CUPRE), which will gather about 10,000 participants from several countries on June 19 and 20.

Guayaquil Historical Park, located on the outskirts of the port city will host the massive event, scheduled to be opened by Ecuadorian President, Rafael Correa, who has reiterated the need to fight against media empires and their economic class interests.

With the participation of scholars from various European and Latin American countries, teachers and students, journalists and researchers, the list of speakers include the first day the former Minister for Communication and Information of Venezuela, Andres Izarra, who will speak about social responsibility in journalism and ethics self-regulation for good practice.

The Spanish Francisco Sierra will talk on journalists and democracy building, under the premise that the media replaced the school and its hegemonic action.

Unfortunately, there's so much to be done to achieve civilized standards regarding mainstream press' behavior. This entire monopolistic structure has to go. At least we are seeing mobilization in Latin America to talk about this issue, which media itself transformed into a "taboo". I predict soon the Inter-American Press Association will make an announcement saying that Correa is trying to destroy "free press" and democracy...
