Guatemala is building its first private city. Its architects say the project is part of a movement to create more liveable communities. But critics say it is an attempt to separate the rich from the poor. Al Jazeera's David Mercer reports from Guatemala City.

Its a large gated community. I live in one, we have 8 buildings, 10 stories tall. A total of 272 apartments. But the stores are all outside the gates so they can be used by the general public. I think these guys are a bit more selective, but that's not so unusual. I've visited Guatemala and they do have a very stratified society. I met a guy from one of their big rich families and he bragged he could make a president. Had really nice looking secretaries too. But his business acumen was defective. I think they are used to making money because they got connections and they get sweetheart deals. I don't think the people have a real say in what happens.
