Hillary Clinton fires back at critics: No one told a man who lost an election to shut up

Hillary Clinton is striking back at critics telling her to "shut up" following her 2016 loss, saying, "They never said that to any man who was not elected."

"I was really struck by how people said that to me - you know, mostly people in the press, for whatever reason - mostly, 'Go away, go away,'" Clinton said Thursday during an event at Rutgers University.

"And I had one of the young people who works for me go back and do a bit of research. They never said that to any man who was not elected. I was kind of struck by that," Clinton said.

Clinton's remarks came in response to a question from Eagleton Institute of Politics' director Ruth Mandel about the former Democratic presidential nominee's reaction to those who say she should "get off the public stage and shut up."

"I'm really glad that, you know, Al Gore didn't stop talking about climate change," Clinton said to applause.

"And I'm really glad John Kerry went to the Senate and became an excellent secretary of State," the former first lady continued. "And I'm really glad John McCain kept speaking out and standing up and saying what he had to say. And for heavens sakes, Mitt Romney is running for the Senate," Clinton said.

as per Politifact.

She does her homework. She is prepared with the facts.

I found her intellectual work ethic inspirational, even if others found it off-putting.

And she always has been.

I now take some personal delight in using William Safire's utterly untrue putdown of her to apply to trump, as often as possible. Years ago, Safire called Hillary Clinton a "congenital liar" in one of his bullshit hot-air columns. That insult actually fits trump to perfection. I enjoy putting the term "congenital liar" in its rightful and most accurate place. Sometimes I throw in "pathological" for good measure. That fits trump, too.

that journalists enabled and promulgated. All candidates are flawed, including everyone who ever ran on any side in every election ever. For some reason, "perfection" was the standard for the woman candidate. And for Trump voters, flawed, morally bankrupt, and unqualified was better than "that woman".

Whatever women do, they must do twice as well as men to be thought half as good. Luckily, this is not difficult.

Updated to add: She must get twice the votes as a man to be considered "a good candidate" or to even win the election....

It's one of the reasons women of color related so easily with her. We know what it's like to have a different set of rules applied to us. We could see it happening to her over and over again. It is my hope that she continues to speak out as much as she pleases. She's earned at least that much!

“When asked about how she sees the predominantly white political landscape and ways to even the playing field, Clinton said she is funding approximately a dozen groups of young people who are recruiting candidates of color, training them and granting them access to resources that prepare them for a spot in government.”
