I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but it seems suspicious that after the bad week(s) the GOP and Trump had, suddenly a Muslim man commits the worst gun massacre in U.S. history. Fodder for their base. Remember, after San Bernardino last December, Trump's numbers went up.

I don't know. Just a thought that popped into my head. I'd like to believe the GOP is not that evil.

Firstly, as much as they hate Muslims, they hate LGBT people too. So that won't rile them up *quite* as much. Second, you already had a bunch of conservatives say this was "God's punishment for being gay". Honestly I'm more worried about Islamophobia from the left, especially seeing we've had too many people on our side imply we shouldn't judge Islamic culture for their negative tendencies and this is bound to spark a backlash.

It seems that many can't comprehend that an event like this could have multiple and myriad causes. Summarily dismissing all but one before we really know much of anything is misguided, at best.

9. I saw that. My point was that some DUers are making similar statements to Trump's while this story

is clearly still developing and nothing is definitive at present. As soon as terrorism was mentioned, other relevant issues, like gun control and homophobia, went out the window. Oh, it's just a terrorist, ramp up the Islamophobia.

I'd expect the knee-jerking from Trump. Not so much from DU, though I guess I shouldn't be that surprised anymore.

10. I'm extremely distressed at the DU trend to make this all about The Other...

Whether they define The Other as Muslim in America, or Fundamentalist Christian, or all Christians. It just goes on and on today. It's bigoted and it's sickening.

We already know the basic perp in these massacres is a white male American of Christian heritage, whose parents are American-born.

The common thread is: male with a grudge, with lots of ammo.

Don't talk to me any more about mental illness.

Talk to me about how to take away the one thing that enables the enraged or disordered male to walk into an elementary school and kill all the little first-graders, or walk into a night club and kill all the people just out for a good time.

Please, please, please. This isn't The Other. It's US.

Or, perhaps more accurately, my group or my cause or my belief system.

Sounds simplistic, but that's what I see a lot of this justification being. If one is pro-Second Amendment, one can blame it on the Muslims and ISIS and deflect from cultural norms about guns in the US potentially being an underlying issue. Even if the attack is religiously-motivated, that doesn't discount the availability of guns being a factor, etc.

If one is Islamophobic, just blame it on all Muslims (like Trump does) and ignore the possibility that homophobia (religion-based or otherwise) and/or US gun culture could be a factor.

It could be a combination of factors, including all or none of the above. Maybe we should get a little more information before jumping on any particular bandwagon. What a concept! Unfortunately, human nature doesn't always (or often) work like that.

Motives aren't always easy to ascribe. It's the people who think they're 100% positive of the motive immediately after one of these events whose motives are also rather questionable.
