More good news just for us!

Machinists' union endorses Clinton for president in 2016

NEW YORK, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Hillary Clinton on Friday won the endorsement of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers for the 2016 U.S. presidential election, making it the second national union to give the Democratic front-runner the stamp of approval.

Clinton is trying to win over labor - often a key source of volunteers and funds for Democrats - as part of an effort to build a broad coalition within her party and avoid a potentially damaging, drawn-out primary fight. The winner of the primary contest will face the Republican nominee in the November 2016 election.

Clinton has already won the backing of the American Federation of Teachers.

600,000! How big is that?

Well, almost the same number of people as total population of...Vermont?

with 15 former members of Congress also endorsing Hillary. These are members who have worked in Congress who has confidence in Hillary but not in Bernie. O'Malley has one endorsement from Congress, 31 Democratic Senate members out of 44, 87 Democratic Representative members out of 188, overwhelming support from Congress.

And the NEA. This is an interesting horse race from the perspective of a labor nerd. Sanders has kind of been catnip for the left wing of labor activists, some unions are endorsing him, some her. Usually things aren't quite so exciting!

I'm glad that IAMAW endorsed her, as I was starting to hear some grumping from my own organizational ties that it was just the ladyunions endorsing HRC, and of course it was predictable of us, etc. I'd like a few more industrial industries to do it, just to rub it in a little. I'm human.

Meanwhile, Clinton’s campaign continues to woo labor leaders through back channels. Democrats familiar with labor unions’ thinking have suggested that large unions — like the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees, which backed her over Barack Obama in 2008 — are leaning toward a Clinton endorsement. (AFSCME’s president Lee Saunders issued a statement praising Clinton in April, and he appeared with her in Washington shortly before her campaign launch.)

Clinton has also spent time courting the Service Employees International Union, the 1.8 million member union unaffiliated with the AFL-CIO that’s behind the Fight for $15 movement. She appeared by video at a Fight for $15 convention in Detroit in June, though she has since avoided endorsing a national $15 hour minimum wage.

Meanwhile, Clinton’s campaign has added to its ranks to personally appeal to labor. The campaign hired its own labor liaison in its early stages, bringing on Nikki Budzinski, a well-respected former organizer of the powerful United Food and Commercial Workers, a major Democratic donor and the labor group behind nationwide Wal-Mart protests.

Clinton campaign Chairman John Podesta hosted about two dozen labor leaders at his house in July. And the candidate has enlisted scores of labor economists and policy experts to craft proposals designed to meet the AFL-CIO’s central demand for 2016: raising wages.

I didn't know that about Nikki Budzinski. I hope that means the OURWalmart coalition is coming in too. That would be huge.

These women have insanely hard lives. One woman had to go back to work *3 days* after having a c-section birth. Lots of painful stories. I am very picky about politicians and how they are in interactions with union members. I genuinely felt HRC understood and was listening, and that the women in the room felt heard.

This is over an hour, but worth watching any bits of it, imo! https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=98&v=Mr6x3Z7dVSw
