Wait, so you're going to spend a lot of time in California and you don't have time to "study" one of our most pressing issues? NOPE.

Water scarcity is going to have a tremendous impact on our lives so maybe climb out of your one-issue campaign and get it together.

So, no, I don't view Sanders coming to California for votes & not being conversant on our devastating drought as legit. #CaliforniaVotes

Yeah, you'd be hard-pressed to find a bigger insult to President Obama than Cornel West. So Bernie Sanders, NOPE. #CaliforniaVotes

(5,737 posts)Also, another way to look at it that the people that are impacted the most, as with any natural disaster, are the lowest income people. The same goes for the drought in CA. Most Bernie-ites do not fall into that category.
All he has are his standard talking points.
Every question asked since his campaign began has been directed back to the talking points
When asked about the failures of socialist countries
When asked about releasing taxes
When asked about CA drought
He's a broken record.

(24,399 posts)We have made a real difference. If anying, you'd think a candidate would know that and score a few easy points by offering some praise to the voters who have made it happen.
Cha
(298,077 posts)including praise for Californians conserving their water.
Instead of .. "I haven't studied that yet.." like it would be off script to say something that showed he gave a hoot? Shades of the NYDN interview.
Props to you all for dealing with your water crisis! Not being there I wasn't thinking about that until I read these tweets.

(51,811 posts)What to do about CA's water shortage is really controversial -- each of the potential solutions has winners, and loses who are fighting it. Sanders is campaigning in the very red Central Valley, which hates the fair solutions Gov. Brown (or any Dem) has offered.
Cha

Good Luck to all you Californian on your water crisis, SunSeeker.. Nice steady Rain would be good.

(32,342 posts)He could have mentioned Nestle! Millionaire water wasters in rich neighborhoods! Climate change affecting the weather patterns! Shit, I have his speech memorized and I can think of three clear places he could have plugged it into his answer on our drought!
Hillary brought up the drought crisis as one of her reasons to keep campaigning in CA this week, on Chris Hayes, which might have been a slightly backhanded comment on Bernie's miss on this question.
brer cat
(24,662 posts)or his handlers are doing a very poor job. It is a no-brainer to talk about the drought and climate change in CA! But we have seen every step of this campaign how out of touch he is.
Starry Messenger
(32,342 posts)I noticed he did this a few years ago in Richmond, CA, talked about Wall Street, but didn't mention the direct impact of Chevron on the town. He might have mentioned they were trying to affect the election, but didn't really connect to local ongoing issues.
It's very myopic.

Sanders obviously doesn't. All he has are the same keywords he's been talking about for 40 years - billionaires, millionaires, establishment, corrupt, rigged, warhawks, neoliberals, and oligarchy. He may be superficially correct on some of these issues but he is the wrong person to create positive change about any of them.

(27,863 posts)I went to hear John Kerry in Seattle and he spent the whole time talking about nothing but issues relevant to the PNW. It was impressive and of course much of it focused on the environment. Local news reported where he ate dinner for his wedding anniversary. Anyway, he was so prepared and yet couldn't capture people's imagination.

(521 posts)In in MA, and early in the primary season, I would engage in some discussion with some college kids at my gym. Naturally, they were for Sanders. But the more I talked with them, I realized how simplistic their worldview is. They honestly believed that once Sanders was in office, he would single-handedly provide free college, universal healthcare, and $15 minimum wage. I tried to explain that it's not that simple, but they don't seem to have a grasp on how our government works.
Also, a couple of the girls thought that Sanders was endearing. They compared him to Carl Fredricksen from Up. Apparently, grumpiness in a little, old man is 'cute.'

(11,644 posts)...and has had for decades. He really isn't interested in growing anything more than his own power and money, and of course his ego.
He has tunnel vision and really, the only change he has made are two: he now uses the billionaires instead of the millionaires he has used for decades in his monologue; and he has added sharp attacks of Hillary Clinton to what has been a more general foe--the Democrat Party. He has shown no interest in the great world beyond his usual rant.
Bernie is a broken record.

(12,448 posts)That's Bernie. He has no curiosity, no interest, no willingness to learn, about anything that's not related to his one issue, or to himself and his campaign.
The first rule of politics: talk about issues local people care about. Right now, water is high on California's list of crucial issues. And Bernie can't bother to learn ANYTHING about it?
I've said it before: Bernie says he cares about "the people" but doesn't give a shit about real, individual people with their own concerns.

(91,039 posts)On the one hand, he does pick up info a great deal faster than Teflon Don; on the other hand, it was truly a Brave New World for Bernie. That area produces 25% of the food in the US, it's several times bigger than Vermont, and he had no idea it was there, really. He was pretty upfront about how impressed he was with this new vista.
SIGH.

Mahalo, Lucinda~
Bernie has exactly one stump speech. He also lacks the intellectual curiosity to dig into issues beyond his usual pseudosocialist pap. He is paper thin on so many issues - including those that are supposedly near and dear to his heart. He is at best a mediocre primary candidate.
Let me put it this way - every day he shows us a new way to fail the "Commander and Chief" test.
