The last time a woman represented a major party in the quest for the White House was never. In 2016, never will become now. The impossible will become possible.
In one week, Hillary Clinton will clinch the delegates required to become the first female presidential nominee of a major party.
There has been a massive effort to quash that mind-blowing accomplishment, to toxify any mention of Hillarys gender. At BNR, we have rejected that effort to censor history and we have repeatedly and proudly hailed the singular victories of Hillary and her voters.
Electing an American president has global ramifications. Electing the first woman president in U.S. history and defeating Donald Trump in the process will change the course of life on this earth. Anyone who gives the idea of a Trump presidency a minutes reflection will know that we are not being hyperbolic.
We endorsed Hillary in January for her experience, vision, compassion and character, and have since become a leading destination for her supporters, with some of the most widely shared positive content about Hillary of the entire cycle. This piece, Hillary Clinton Is One of the Most Ethical (and Most Lied About) Political Leaders in America, has quietly amassed nearly a quarter million shares, as many as the NY Times endorsement.
We always knew that our effective advocacy for Hillary would expose us to vicious attacks. We accept those attacks as a badge of honor. The grotesque caricature painted by her detractors has no relation to who she really is. Defending her integrity against an avalanche of hate and lies is something we do with passion and conviction.
The person we fight for is an honorable, hard-working, resilient human being. An achiever. A lifelong public servant. A mother. A grandmother. A friend to so many. Securing health care for millions of kids, which Hillary did, is enough of an achievement for a hundred lifetimes. Her bashers can spew filth at her, but her legacy will outlast and outshine theirs.
We know that a national campaign is a bruising process. At this late stage, there are hurt feelings, anger, frustration, bitterness, disappointment. Theres also elation, hope, pride, satisfaction. Advocates on all sides are emotionally exhausted. We wouldnt expect anything less considering the stakes and the gravity of the office.
And we also understand that there are intractable media narratives that have taken hold through systematic repetition, narratives that deceive and confuse the electorate. Like the ludicrous one about Hillarys voters supposedly lacking enthusiasm. Or the one about Donald Trump being a qualified candidate worthy of anything other than scorn.
Weve learned to ignore the static and focus on the goal.
To Hillary supporters, we say this: History is within your grasp. Feel it. Dont let anyone take it away from you. Dont let anyone shout you down. Dont let anyone pretend what youve done doesnt matter.
