(297,888 posts)Emmett Hansen II, the Democratic National Committeeman for the U.S. Virgin Islands, decided to shift his support to Clinton after a weekend briefing on her plans for U.S. territories that followed months of dissatisfaction with Sanders lack of concrete positions.
His reasons go right to the heart of Clinton's critique of the Sanders campaign. Hansen said that while hes a believer in sweeping change, he also wants to get things done.
There are no more windmills to joust against and no more mountains to climb, said Hansen, a native of St. Croix who was on the Sanders campaign's list of publicly committed superdelegate supporters. It comes down to one thing: whats best for the Virgin Islands, to be fully incorporated into the United States.
Hansen said the decision to switch wasn't easy. He had been communicating with the Sanders campaign for months, pushing his aides to commit to taking detailed positions on issues affecting the U.S. Virgin Islands. He said the answers weren't forthcoming. ``I know a million different ways not to answer a question, he said.

(90,927 posts)Hawai'i was still a Territory when my family moved there, and I had a child's-eye view of the Statehood debate. Even though it has become controversial in the past couple of decades, and believe me when I say I understand why that is, at the time it was a very urgent consideration of our powerlessness vis a vis the US government and the benefits of full citizenship.
If the US is going to hold offshore territories for whatever reason, we should be meticulous in our treatment of the people who live there.
I am glad Hillary gets that. I'm not really surprised that Senator "One Size Fits All" doesn't really.

(297,888 posts)Hawaii became a state and what other off shore territories are going through.
As Emmett Hansen II said.. it's all about "what's good for the Virgin Islands".. and sanders didn't answer their questions or return their phone calls.. who does that? Not the first report I've heard of this..
Hillary with all her experience on the world stage would get that.
August 21, 1959 Hawaii became a state

You don't want to be the last one off a sinking ship. That is not a good career-building choice.
