the closed primary in Kentucky actually hurt Hillary (although she won anyway). There are several states that used to be Democratic strongholds, but are now red. In those states, you still have a higher percentage of registered Dems that just vote Republican. Kentucky is one of those.

Basically, Hillary won counties in Tennessee heavily, where independents were allowed to vote, that were adjacent to counties in Kentucky that she lost, where only Dems were allowed to vote.
