Hillary Clinton
Related: About this forumHillary Clinton Is A Progressive Democrat, Despite What You May Have Heard
If Sanders is the standard by which youre going to decide whether a politician is a progressive, then almost nobody from the Democratic Party would qualify. Take Sanders out of the equation, and suddenly Clinton looks an awful lot like a mainstream progressive firmly on the left side of the American ideological spectrum and maybe on the left side of the Democratic Partys, as well.
One reason its easy to miss this is that Clintons domestic policy agenda doesnt include one signature idea or position thats going to dominate the headlines or get activists excited. Instead, its a series of proposals that, together, would fortify the social safety net, strengthen regulation of industry, and bolster public services. To the extent these programs require new spending, the money would largely come from new taxes on the wealthy.
Consider just a few key components of Clintons economic and energy agenda:

(16,104 posts)This is the Front Page prominent headline at HuffPo under "The Closet Progressive" right now.

It is positive regarding both Hillary and Bernie, both now and in November.
And it is such an affront to Bernie supporters both at HuffPo and DU GD: P - they just can't stand anything positive about Hillary.
For them, it has never really been about Bernie at all.

(51,797 posts)They rationalize his vote for giving fun manufacturers special immunities and against Kennedy's immigration reform bill (Hillary voted the opposite of Sanders on both votes, on the side of progressives). That fact is, Hillary has voted with the Democrats a higher percentage than Sanders has.

(9,148 posts)Bernie Sanders shoved through a Bill on behalf of then Tx Gov GWBush, to dump VT's Toxic Radioactive Waste on the poorest Latino community in TX.
Bernie voted against the great progressive Paul Wellstone's amendments that would have protected this community, and who sat on the board of VT's Radioactive waste disposal, responsible for doing the dirty deal with GW Bush in TX?
Jane Sanders. Who by the way, is STILL collecting her $4000 salary for being an alternate on that same Waste Board.
Paul Wellstone was the progressive who fought for human rights of these people.
BERNIE chose to dump VT's radioactive waste in their backyard by voting against the Progressive Amendment.
Bernie is certainly NOT the progressive he says he is.
How can Bernie sell himself as a champion against toxic fracking, when he's FOR toxic radioactive dumping on the poorest of Latino people in the country?
I'd love to know how bernie justifies one over the other.
Someone needs to send bernie a book on the late great Progressive, Sen Paul Wellstone.
He could learn a lot from it.
