Tomorrow Morning the US Flag Will Be Raised In Havana *BOG Post*

Raising the Flag at U.S. Embassy Havana

U.S. Department of State

Published on Aug 12, 2015

A New Chapter for the United States and Cuba

On January 4, 1961, U.S. Marines Jim Tracy, F.W. "Mike" East, and Larry C. Morris assigned to U.S. Embassy Havana lowered the American flag outside the embassy for the last time. For 54 years, the soldiers’ warm affection for the Cuban people never wavered. And neither did their belief that, one day, they would reunite to raise the flag again.

On August 14, 2015, these three U.S. Marines reunite and join Secretary of State John Kerry to re-open the U.S. Embassy in Havana, Cuba. Watch this video as they reflect on the past and look towards the future.

...... watching a new television series called Cuban Chrome. It is amazing what the car enthusiast there have been able to do without any imports. The episode last night featured the characters watching President Obama announcing the resumption of diplomatic ties to Cuba and his efforts to lift the embargo. The look on those families faces was priceless.

I understand why some of the Cuban people want to keep hating. No, don't tell me I don't, because I am first generation from Latvia, and my family suffered under communism. My grandparents lost their home, their son. I was born in a DP camp in Germany because the communists threw my family out of the country and took our homes and property. I KNOW!!!

But times come when you need to try another way.

If you think life was hell for my family (and it was) attempting to live on shit wages to survive, without the language, imagine what it would be for people of darker skin.

I am saying that I understand both sides of this difficult decision, because I've been there.

I completely agree with Obama's stand. Apparently I misstated my point. It is time now to get over past grievances and try to heal the wounds of the past.
