Cornel West slams President Obama and endorses Jill Stein. Surprised?

So much for Sanders' endorsement.
Unity is not their gig.
Cornel is still stumping against the Dem Party & unity necessary to keep us from a Nation under Trump/Pence.
Would THAT make him happier!!
Hello Bush/Gore/Nader

(53,978 posts)Many of us warned them about him when he was first bought onto the campaign.
After the vile things he said about the president, we knew he was not to be trusted.
And here he was on the platform committee and now backs Jill Stein.
That just about amounts to treachery.

(9,148 posts)Your warnings should have been heeded.
This is precisely why we must hold onto our Super Ds.
West was a nobody until Sanders generously gave him a voice. 3rd Party standing on principle, will f this up & give us Trump/Pence.

Keep the Dems divided. Isn't that what the whole thing was always about? From the RW playbook..divide & conquer.

(2,978 posts)I'm really sad to see this community move in lockstep to condemn anyone who criticizes the Party, like we're the USSR and this is Pravda, if in fact that criticism could be legitimate.
West says, "Obama has power right now to enact the recommendations made after Ferguson. Better training, independent civilian oversight boards, body cameras. But he has not used executive orders to push any of these changes through."
You know, it has seemed to me that Cornel West's criticisms have been pretty over the top and that he's got some personal thing about Obama. BUT he has a point that 1) Obama didn't travel to the places where these citizens were shot (to my knowledge) and 2) that if he's got the power West says he has, above, and hasn't exercised it, that's not cool.
But, West could be wrong. Does anyone know whether Obama actually COULD use executive orders to push any of these changes through and if he could, why he hasn't?
Could we actually have a reasoned, respectful conversation about whether this is a legitimate criticism?

(53,978 posts)we unified behind the nominee.
West is going over to a third party. Not acceptable.

(2,978 posts)This has nothing do to with the nominee.
The article quoted (which I excerpted) Cornel West's comment that Obama had the ability now, by executive order, to mandate improved community policing, body cameras, increased accountability, etc, and that West felt he wasn't. All I wanted to know was, does Obama in fact have that authority or was Cornel West misrepresenting it? Since when do we abandon a debate about reducing police violence against unarmed citizens because the person raising the questions supports a third party candidate?
Do we trash whatever other points a person raises because they don't support HRC for President? Are you kidding?
geek tragedy
(68,868 posts)unilateral authority to do something like this, and it's unlikely that the federal government has the unilateral authority to force states to do it.
Perhaps Cornel West has listened to too many Donald Trump speeches.
