just too too true. finally after years i could probably do it.. only for tar.gz and only because of archlinux pkgbuild

$ tar xfvz <filename.tar.gz>

1. Why add the compression switches?

tar is smart enough to do that itself.

tar cf something.tar /some/path

Or

tar xf something.tar -C /some/path

just tried it and it worked as advertised.

thanks! added up just imagine how many keystrokes ditching the compression switches will save me over the rest of my life! you'd've saved the day for sure.
