Not sure if this is the right place, but does anyone know about DOIs?

Digital object identifiers -- similar to ISBNs for books, but for Internet items, like a permanent link.

A client wants me to find the DOIs of some of her reference material, but so far I am striking out finding them for such things as New York Times articles, an Economist article, etc. I've tried entering information in www.crossref.org/guestquery/ but I either get nothing or what looks to be a bunch of goobledygook, not a straightforward number like a DOI.

I had understood that most items printed online in the past couple years were assigned DOIs, but I might be wrong. Maybe they are mainly used for academic journal articles (?).
