Well...I thnk my MacBook (almost 9 years old)

Is about to give up the ghost.

It started dong something weird...the monitor turns itself off, the on light goes off. You close the lid, it comes back.

I think it's time to put it to pasture unless I can find a cheap fix.

I was thinking, maybe it's the motherboard...since the first odd behavior (solved with external keyboard) was odd keyboard behavior.

machine is operating within parameters. I am wondering if this is a defective heat sensor?

The motherboard has other signs and symptoms for failing.

a free utility, we will see. I cannot afford a new machine right now, to be brutally honest.

Self shutting down due to heat problems. There should be a diagnostic tool, the system should be recording these decisions somewhere.

Did you say the fan is working, or not?

I've had times when one of my units runs the fan too much.

But better to hear the fan than no sound at all!

also even if it doesn't crash, won't load well if hot.

Into the new machine. It did die, at best buy in front of me. Will get it recycled later.

Went to the PX, got the same machine with their global service. It is run through Apple, it's just better. And since we take it to the field...

I finally gave in and got a new one.

It could be your battery.

Does it happen when you are plugged into a power source?

The battery can get hot and swell, causing all kinds of problems.

you can have things running in background which can be eating up drive and heating things up. Google Earth is a big one.

You can see what's running in the Activity Monitor. Worth taking a look.

We stopped there on our way down from San Francisco and really enjoyed it.

If we were moving to the Carribean, we might even consider going back up there.

Hope you find your shack, but watch your back. She's feisty!

If you do, consider buying your next Mac and their extended guarantee there. Your wine issue, within the term would have been covered, and you are around water. I did. Likely this machine will be going to less than friendly environments.
