IE will not connect.

My neighbor is having a problem with Internet Explorer connecting. I tried several things, and the only thing that worked was to disable the Protection Mode in Security. Now it is working but I am not comfortable with this. There has to be something else going on. Does anyone have any suggestions why this would happen and anything that I can do to get it working for her.

I know that she should just not use IE, but she is not very good with computers and this is the only internet program that she is comfortable with and just keeps telling me that she cannot learn how to use a different program. I will keep trying to wean her off, but I am not sure that is an option.

2. Not exactly. Windows 10 decided to call it something else but it's still ExploDer.

And older versions of Windows will still use it.

at this point, is there? I know that I was just going to ignore it, just like I always have until I need a new computer.

Not that my problem is solved for my neighbor.

6. if a simple 'restore settings to earlier date' doesn't work. How does she connect to the net?

IE gives a 'fix connection' button, It should say what the connection problem is.

Try to un-power her modem, wait a few minutes and then turn it on. If that doesn't work, she can call her ISP and they can test the connection, help her to open the isp page on her computer and remotely fix the problem for her.

Tell her to call billing and ask for credit for the days the service wasn't working. They give credit but you have to ask for it from billing.

I will have to see if she has anything too important to lose, then I can try that. Right now, I have her using Chrome, which was also on her computer and she just didn't use it. It works fine for her. There is not a problem with the internet or the modem since we did get Chrome to work without issue and also IE worked when I disabled the Protection Mode.

We never got a "fix connection" message. We would get a "page cannot be displayed", and then a pop up message at the bottom of the page saying that the page had to close, then the "page cannot be displayed" again. It would have gone on forever, except that after two tries, it stopped working and said that it stops after two tries to avoid a loop of failure messages.

But we had tried the reset of the modem before we worked with the computer. She also had called her ISP, they tested and everything was working. Their only suggestion was to call either IE support or her computer manufacturer. I've been through the "whose fault is it" routine before and I am sure that they will all be pointing at each other.

Some setting she recently changed or some add-on from a webpage or a malware is probably what caused the issue.

I'm pretty sure one has to use the Chrome icon to open IE once chrome is installed. Perhaps check windows update to make sure everything is up to date.

good luck, computers are frustrating sometimes. Your neighbor is lucky to have your help

But I am not the most computer savvy person around. When I was working, I leaned on the IT guy for a lot of my issues, and I did learn some tricks from him. Alas, I am flying solo now and it makes it much harder when you don't have someone to bounce ideas/problems off of. This group is another reason that DUers are the best.

I think it is more Windows 8.1 then IE 11, because the problem I was having was that I could only connect to certain sites (Democratic Underground wasn't one of them) regardless of whether I used IE11 or Firefox.

I had to disable the Enhanced Protection Mode as well, that seems to be working so far. A good anti virus program is always a good idea.

I didn't think it was a problem with more than her computer since I have had no problems at all. Her home page is Yahoo, and mine is not, and I did wonder if it was just a problem getting to the Yahoo home page, but it didn't allow me to get far enough to try to get to other locations. I just had an update the other day when I shut down the computer---I wonder if they have a fix now.
