Junior doctors' contract set to be imposed

From the BBC. I don't think this will stop strike action. I don't know anyone who doesn't support the doctors. The NHS is not safe in Tory hands.

Ministers are expected to impose a contract on junior doctors in England later.

It comes after chief negotiator Sir David Dalton advised the government to do "whatever it deems necessary" to end the deadlock.

The British Medical Association (BMA) rejected a "final take-it-or-leave-it" government offer on Wednesday, which included a concession on Saturday pay.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt is due to make a statement to Parliament soon.

The news has emerged as junior doctors concluded a second 24-hour strike at 08:00 GMT in their long-running dispute about pay and conditions.

There are 55,000 junior doctors in England - a third of the medical workforce.

The contract offered by the government would have seen those working at least one in four Saturdays get extra pay for each one they work. The move represented a more generous offer than the previous proposal, when the bar for extra pay was set at one in three.

Junior doctor leaders have promised to fight on after the government in England announced it will impose a new contract on the profession.

The British Medical Association said it was "considering all options" as the dispute threatens to escalate further.

It comes after Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said he had been left with no choice but to act - just hours after the latest doctor strike ended.

The union refused to accept a "take-it-or-leave-it" offer on Wednesday.

BMA junior doctor leader Dr Johann Malawana said the contract was "flawed" and they had put forward a "fair and affordable" alternative.

"The government's shambolic handling of this process from start to finish has totally alienated a generation of junior doctors - the hospital doctors and GPs of the future, and there is a real risk that some will vote with their feet.

"Our message to the government is clear - junior doctors cannot and will not accept a contract that is bad for the future of patient care, the profession and the NHS as a whole, and we will consider all options open to us."

The stance raises the prospect of more strikes, while behind the scenes there has been talk of legal action, mass resignations and doctors refusing to sign contracts.

Further proof that the NHS is not safe in Tory hands.

So it's a bit of a rocky day for you if you happen to be a junior doctor. After lots of striking, Secretary of State for Health Jeremy Hunt has decided to impose a 7-day contract without regard for any of it.

So, naturally people are venting their frustrations by editing Hunt's Wikipedia Page.

(Some of these screenshots are hilarious!)

Sturgeon was at pains to point out at today's First Minister's Questions that we have no such strife up here.

Saying how strikes were initially popular but support dwindled as they went on. He looked very smug indeed, but doesn't he always. He neglected to mention how receiving loads money from Tobacco squared with his job as former Health Secretary.

People will start voting with their feet. The NHS is understaffed as it is. We might all have to move to Scotland at this rate.

A drinks and canapés evening featuring Jeremy Hunt has been cancelled after reports junior doctors might attend and ask him questions about their new contract.

The Health Secretary had been due to mingle with Tory activists on Friday night over nibbles and wine at a party fundraiser, until the event’s open invitation began to circulate on social media.

Some junior doctors and their supporters, who say Mr Hunt has refused to speak to them directly, said it would be worthwhile buying tickets to the evening and engaging him in debate about his new policy.

It says something when even the Daily Mail is attacking him.

Junior doctors are threatening a mass exodus to Australia after Jeremy Hunt forced through his controversial new contract yesterday.

There has been a huge surge in the numbers seeking certificates to practise abroad and some have already lined up jobs.

Almost 760 doctors were issued with documents by the General Medical Council in the first four weeks of this year – nearly 200 a week and almost double the usual number. Although they include some older GPs and consultants, the vast majority were disillusioned younger doctors.

Each junior doctor costs the NHS at least £350,000 to train over eight years, including university costs and hospital placements.

If only half of the doctors issued certificates last year moved abroad, it would amount to a loss to taxpayers of £1.5billion.

Yesterday Health Secretary Mr Hunt announced he would be imposing the contract because further negotiations with the doctors’ union were not ‘realistically possible’.

His decision followed a 24-hour strike by junior doctors on Wednesday – the second in a month. The walkouts have led to a total of 7,000 cancelled operations.

Last night up to 300 junior doctors and other campaigners protested outside the Department of Health in Whitehall, calling on Mr Hunt to resign.

They chanted ‘Where are you Jeremy?’, ‘Jeremy Hunt has got to go’ and ‘We won’t give up the fight’.

Some NHS bosses have distanced themselves from suggestions they backed a new junior doctors contract being imposed, after their names were linked to a letter used to justify the move.

Names of 20 chief executives appeared on a letter from the government's chief negotiator, advising it to do "whatever it deems necessary" to end the row.

On Thursday, Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said a contract would be imposed.

But 10 of the letter's signatories say they do not support the decision.

It brings tears to your eyes.

On a slightly less serious note, viewers of Channel 4's The Last Leg voted Hunt Dick of the Year, beating Donald Trump by 80% to 20% of the vote.

the QE Hospital and University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust deny Bowman's claims (which have been picked up by a wide range of media): http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-35558942

I hope he doesn't pay to dearly for sticking his head above the parapet and details of the cover that was available don't distract from the main issues.
