Hague to launch worldwide network of commonwealth embassies to tackle 'superpower' EU

William Hague will tomorrow launch a worldwide network of British Commonwealth embassies to rival the emergence of the EU as a foreign superpower.

The Foreign Secretary is in Canada where he will sign an agreement to open joint UK-Canadian diplomatic missions abroad.

He also hopes Australia and New Zealand will join the initiative whereby the four countries will pool their resources to extend their combined influence on world affairs.

Makes me wonder if he's highlighting an issue of which we were not previously aware.

Or for Australia or New Zealand. I imagine there aren't many places where Canada has an embassy but we don't (maybe the odd country in the Americas); maybe more with Australia or New Zealand in the Pacific. And it sounds quite different from "the EU’s fast-expanding European External Action Service, which is setting up offices in the US and other major countries".

More like for Micronesia: Britain handles it from the Philippines: http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travel-and-living-abroad/find-an-embassy/asia-and-oceania/micronesia , while Australia has an embassy in it: http://www.dfat.gov.au/missions/countries/fm.html

Yes, this sounds like "an issue of which we were not previously aware"; maybe one that just the diplomat who was quoted thinks is an issue - that the EU programme needs 'rivalling'. Notice that Hague talked about it costing less, which is a much more believable reason.

However, I don't think its is a bad idea for English speaking Commonwealth countries to pool some of their resources. Much of low level stuff they deal with will be identical and they often share common legal processes
