Rees-Mogg suggests pub-goers enjoy 'yard of ale' to mark lockdown easing

I initially thought this was a rare good idea from the haunted pencil. Until I considered how few pubs actually have a Yard glass, how much beer would get spilled, the risk of the drinker bringing the contents of his stomach back up and how many people attempting a yard would end up in A&E.

Pub-goers should "go back to drinking a yard of ale" to mark pubs reopening in England while maintaining social distancing rules, Jacob Rees-Mogg says.

In the Commons, Tory MP Brendan Clarke-Smith asked Mr Rees-Mogg what could be done to support the reopening of pubs.

The Commons leader replied: "I think there's a very easy answer in pubs and that is people should go back to drinking a yard of ale.

"Because if they drink a yard of ale they will maintain social distancing while enjoying an extra large drink to celebrate the fact that they are back in the pub."

1. Well, Moggy, I see a photo opportunity in your near future.

Go on, man. Walk the walk. Lead the way.

3. Impressive!

It's usually a LOT messier than that.

4. This is a joke stolen from Private Eye

On the other hand, if Rees Mogg reads Private Eye, there's hope for him yet.

("Desperate Business" cartoon - man in pub behind dotted line "yard of ale and a two metre flute of cider please mate"

And yes, I remember our college once-a-year yard of ale competition, and how messy it got. None more so than when someone did it with Guinness ...

6. Seen it being done at the Great British Beer Festival

An event where Yard glasses are on sale and people are daft enough to buy them.

You can usually tell at GBBF when somebody is attempting to drink a yard of ale by the big braying crowd around them and the pools of spilt beer.
