I am beyond stressed today @ what the future holds

I thought I had reconciled myself to Brexit after Boris won such a large majority in the General Election . I saw the result as a second referendum on Brexit and lets face it Boris could not have a bigger mandate on this issue - well in England anyway. I have resigned myself to the fact that today is the last day I will be a European Citizen - probably in my life time. Who knows what the future holds but if there is a further referendum sometime in the future I will pushing up daisies before we get there.

Brexit is finally here. Global Britain it is then. 😨

Sorry, but I would maybe have a scintilla of more faith in Brexit Britain if we were not run by a bunch of right wing fuck wits, and the opposition was actually led - just led - by anyone that could provide a reasonable level of scrutiny on what these bastards on the Tory benches are up to right now. I do not think that is to much to ask in the oldest modern democracy on the planet, do you?

I said to someone once. It is not the fact that you voted for Brexit that upsets me, it is the fact that you believed that the ineffective, inept and plain awful people who rule us would in anyway be able to make a decent fist of it.

And here we are. Pass the smelling salts someone.

Shit.

Just as I am equally fearful for our future in the US--especially now.

Many have quoted about a supposed Chinese Curse: "May You Live In Interesting Times." Well, for all the creativity that supposedly comes from such upheaval, I'd appreciate a return to some rational calm.

It's a race to the bottom AKA 'the Brexit revolution' now.

Services and social provision will be plundered, rights and standards will be worn to a nub in the interests of unfettered profit making.

The ordinary and the vulnerable will pay, and the wealthy will of course turn a bob or two.

At some point the will of the people will be heard. Johnson won the last election by a handy margin, so its the way it is.
Just like here; if we run the best candidate trump will be defeated.
If Michelle Obama was the candidate, trump would lose by double digits. Sadly she's not running. Yet.

People voted for this nonsense because we are badly lead as a nation and because the vast majority of people have not got the slightest idea how the world really works. These are not things that will magically change overnight.

This will be the same. MAJOR changes that will affect most everyone. The path to improvement will have to be a slow & steady one.
I believe it can be done & I believe the people of England will make it happen one way or another. They survived before the EU, they'll make it again.
I'm just tired of doom & gloom all the time about everything. If it was another country I may not have as much faith

Fri Jan 31, 2020, 09:46 AM

In no particular order:

1) What you proffer is magical thinking and makes no economic sense

2) We were the 'sick man of Europe' before we joined the EU - an economic basket-case, I remember it and it was dreadful

3) The EU is not the USSR

4) We're Scotland, Wales, England and NI , not just England - but now bitterly divided with multiple fault lines

5) The Good Friday Agreement - well who knows what the impact will be ?

6) For some reason, you seem to think that more EU departures would be a good thing - we've been a salutary lesson, so I think you may well be disappointed on that score.

7) We have a hard right govt which will gleefully leverage Brexit to its own ends

8) Brexit has emerged from and in turn fueled and enabled racism and xenophobia

etc etc etc

Apologies if all of the doom and gloom offends your sensibilities.

This is going to be an unmitigated disaster. Businesses are already leaving the UK and this will only accelerate as it's very clear that the UK government is clueless about international trade. And we will be in a hopelessly weak position to negotiate trade agreements.

On top of that, yesterday's Bank of England report:

"further downgraded its view of the underlying prospects for the economy to the lowest level since the second world war"

Hard to believe that the democracies that SO many fought and died for in the Great Wars would be go down the way they are - not from brute force by militaristic battles, but from WITHIN, done in by the avarice and hate from our fellow countrymen and women.

Fri Jan 31, 2020, 09:05 AM
Jan 2020

if they so want it: https://www.change.org/p/european-commission-continued-eu-citizenship-for-brits

I am British and European. I was born a European citizen, and I have enjoyed the great benefits of citizenship throughout my life. As things stand, this will sadly end in 2020. Suddenly in 12 months time, Brits will no longer be European citizens. We will be losing part of our international identity. Please sign this petition, urging the European Commission and EU, to maintain European citizenship for those that would like to keep it, but who stand to lose it due to Brexit...

A comment:

Does the UK government have the legal right unilaterally to remove our EU citizenship? Including those who were born EU citizens and those who were disenfranchised by the 2015 UK Referendum Act? Isn't this for the EU to decide?

And there's a group or poll here with the same aim with over 136000 signatures: https://www.eucitizenship.org.uk/

Needless to say, I stayed in last night. If nothing else I currently have a load of Scottish £10 notes, so I would have almost certainly been given a fatwa the moment I went to the bar to order a beer at one of those "parties".
