Watching the commons debate today and the level of deceit and self-deception is off the charts.

We are witnessing live the lies and self-interested manoeuvres of politicians whose more than obvious tactics are all about party and as such they are unfit to serve. It seems that the national interest, international obligations, our standing in the world and our wellbeing are be sacrificed at the altar of hard left and hard right power games and electoral calculations. It seems to me that both parties dream of recasting our moderate nation in their radical image, and Brexit gives them that opportunity. And by God they are running with it, with much gusto.

For the rest of us, as they play their power games, we stand in front of a future that in which we will have diminished standing and rights because a section of the electorate gave power to isolationist wannabee autocrats because of spite, anger and tantrums focused in completely the wrong direction.

As I watch the bear pit this morning it is clear that whatever happens today, we will not be seeing closure to this crisis anytime soon. And quite frankly anything the ERG agrees is a good deal means that it is really shite. This Brexit obsession will continue to suck oxygen from UK politics in foreseeable future.

It is almost like watching a family member descend into psychosis.

voted Remain, he said that he and his friends are tired of it dragging on, which was quite surprising to hear. He did make the point though that the British people don't realise that this would only be the end of the beginning. The pain will go on regardless.

Politics on both sides of the pond feel just like that for me. And I say that as someone who has observed a loved one lose any sort of grasp of reality in the clinical sense. It's absolutely horrifying.

...is that they are all either leaving parliament at the next election or represent old coal mining areas where Labour are in full scale retreat.

It's as though the likes of John Mann and Kevin Barron have all decided to screw everyone else over because they won't be around to deal with the consequences.
