1 million Brits signed a petition to halt Brexit and broke Parliament’s website

By Jennifer Hassan March 21 at 11:22 AM

LONDON — While it’s up for debate whether the British government is completely broken, Parliament’s website most definitely is.

A petition calling for Prime Minister Theresa May to revoke Article 50 and remain in the European Union gained fresh momentum Thursday as thousands of exasperated, angry and seemingly embarrassed Brits took to the website in an attempt to stop Brexit from happening.

As of Thursday morning, the petition had racked up more than 800,000 signatures and had caused Parliament’s website to crash because of the sheer volume of people attempting to add their names. By 3 p.m., British time on Thursday, the petition had climbed to over a million signatures.

“The government repeatedly claims exiting the EU is ‘the will of the people’. We need to put a stop to this claim by proving the strength of public support now, for remaining in the EU. A People’s Vote may not happen - so vote now,” the petition reads.
