Prince Philip will not be prosecuted over crash

14 February 2019

The Duke of Edinburgh will not face prosecution over his road crash near the Sandringham estate, the Crown Prosecution Service has said.

The 97-year-old voluntarily gave up his driving licence on Saturday after his Land Rover Freelander collided with another vehicle in Norfolk last month.

He later apologised to the occupants of the other car - two women and a baby.

The CPS says it decided that it would not be in the public interest to prosecute the duke.

Chris Long, Chief Crown Prosecutor from CPS East of England, said: "We took into account all of the circumstances in this case, including the level of culpability, the age of the driver and the surrender of the driving licence."

To get my dad (age 87) to give up driving. Good for Prince Philip to realize it was time.

in a new Range Rover they had delivered.

It was announced a couple days ago that he was surrendering his driving license. Today they announced he's not being charged ... that's not a coincidence.

I not a royal hater, not at all, just think he should have been stopped much sooner than now. He is known in the area around Sandringham as a less than exemplary driver. He's lucky no one was seriously injured or killed in that last accident.

The Prince is pretty bull-headed, and definitely has a sense of entitlement. The Queen is more grounded, and I think she knows when to put down the royal foot.
