1. This whole nonsense exemplifies everything wrong with British politics

Banning the Burqua won't make anybody's life better. It's all about spite. And spitefulness towards anybody different has become the driving force in British politics.

It's also something that could be potentially incitement to racial and religious hatred by Boris Johnson.

And also, why on earth are people taking Boris Johnson seriously on this subject? A man who can barely dress himself is not somebody who should be lecturing anyone else on what to wear.

2. Has anyone got a link to the whole column he wrote that is generally available?

I've heard of snippets from it, but I don't know how incendiary it actually was (I know, for instance, he said he didn't think burqas or niqabs should be banned).

I don't know how much we need to treat a small section of society's ideas about their religion with kid gloves. Most Muslim women don't cover their faces. I feel that some women are forced into it; I also feel that women who aren't, but want to cover their faces in public, are doing their bit to hinder understanding between people, and are a fair subject for criticism. Even ridicule.

On edit: a combination of the reprinting of it in Gulf News (but which misses out the 'letterbox' bit, presumably because they think that offensive) and a reddit thread (which doesn't seem to give the end of it) seems to get there:

"Letterbox" is his opinion that the garments are similar to British mail boxes.
