A container fire aboard a freight ship off Victoria continued to burn Sunday, after response vessels spent the night cooling the boat's hull itself with water.

But responders could not douse the flames directly because of the chemicals in the MV Zim Kingston's burning cargo, the Canadian Coast Guard said on Sunday morning.

"Due to the nature of chemicals onboard the container ship, applying water directly to the fire is not an option," the federal agency said in a tweet just after 9 a.m. PT on Sunday.

Devastating. TV report said some of the containers they lost had dangerous goods. So that's pretty applegrove Oct 2021 #2

35 of them were found floating but not sure what is in the containers that were lost, sounds like it could be dangerous chemicals.

bad. Apparently it is more common for ships as they get bigger and bigger to lose their containers. This ship was 13 years old.
