Evers says last minute changes expand WI voucher reach unexpectedly, give $420 mill. to private/religious schools
State Superintendent of Schools Tony Evers says Walkers voucher plan could cost over a short period of time over $1 billion dollars and forms a separate public education system at the expense of our existing K-12 system. He also warns that language recently tucked into the budget at the last minute could allow for even more satellite voucher schools across the state than were expected and called the switch totally unexpected and out of left field.
The following comes from the June 22nd episode of Upfront with Mike Gousha:
Gousha: There is now language in this budget that was added at the last minute that essentially says that schools in the voucher program in Milwaukee and Racine -thats where the voucher program currently exists they would still be able to accept low income students from other places around the state. Your concern is you believe that there could be schools that will set up satellite campuses across the state ... Could you not prevent it legally?
Evers: The people that are supportive of this expansion are saying Evers, you can take care of that. I can guarantee you the first time I try to take care of that Ill have a lawsuit on my hands." This one came right out of left field. Nobody expected it to be a statewide expansion of vouchers.
