Dems rip budget, transportation deal

Assembly Dems today said they are uncertain about their support of a Bucks arena deal but positive the GOP budget's transportation plan will cost the state 5,500 jobs through delayed projects.

Calling the budget "horrible," Rep. Chris Taylor, D-Madison, said it also will cut aid to public schools, slash spending on the UW System by $250 million and undercut the state's long-term care system. She said Republican decisions have "devastated" the state.

"They allege they've done great things for the people of Wisconsin in the budget," Taylor said. "Well, they're the only ones who think so."

Dem support for the Bucks deal is unknown, Assembly Minority Leader Peter Barca said. He said Assembly Dems still are absorbing the details of the proposal and will caucus on it tomorrow.

He said some of his members are open to the deal, but he cautioned the road to passage will be difficult if the arena proposal is removed from the budget.

"The chances for keeping the Bucks in the state of Wisconsin and protecting the taxpayers have gone down dramatically with the decision to treat this as a standalone," Barca said.

Taylor said Dems received a Legislative Fiscal Bureau memo that stated Wisconsin would lose 5,500 jobs through delayed projects in the proposed transportation budget.

That, combined with the proposed bonding, show legislative Republicans and Gov. Scott Walker have failed to solve the state's transportation problems, Barca said. The GOP, he said, is just "kicking a bigger can down a longer road."
