Madrona, Mount Baker beaches close due high bacteria levels in water
The list of Seattle swimming spots that are closed is growing, and it's not just due to the COVID-19 pandemic and budget cuts.
Seattle Parks and Recreation announced Saturday that Madrona and Mount Baker beaches will also be closed due to high levels of bacteria detected in the water. During the closure, swimmers and pets alike are advised not to wade, play with or drink the water.
The two closures come after Enatai Beach, Gene Coulon, Matthews Beach and Newcastle Beach were closed due to high levels of bacteria also detected. Other beaches in Kirkland as well as Groveland Park on Mercer Island are closed due to crowding.
High bacteria levels doesn't always necessarily mean there is a sewage spill. Waste from animals such as dogs and waterfowl also contributes to the problem, and King County collects samples of water from closed beaches twice a week to monitor bacteria levels.
