Boeing makes sweeping cuts to jet production, could merge Dreamliner factories
Bruised worse by the Covid-19 pandemic than it thought, Boeing said Wednesday it is slashing production of almost every commercial airplane and making plans to cut more workers.
Output of Boeing's marquee 787 Dreamliner will be cut 40% as the completed widebody jets have accumulated near its factories in Everett and Charleston, South Carolina, because airlines have no cash to pay for them and take them away.
"With this lower rate profile, we will also need to evaluate the most efficient way to produce the 787, including studying the feasibility of consolidating production in one location. We will share more with you following our study," Boeing CEO David Calhoun said.
The grim news, announced as part of Boeing's second-quarter earnings, translates into billions of dollars in lost sales for already battered suppliers in the Puget Sound region and across Washington.
