Report: Washington COVID-19 cases could be declining, but hospitalizations, deaths rising

New cases of the novel coronavirus have been rising in counties across Washington, but a situation report from the state's department of health suggests some of the counties hit hardest have had plateaus and even decreases in daily cases.

But the report hedged the optimism, and said community transmission was still growing in early July. It also said delays in testing could account for some of the trends showing decreases. It used data through July 13.

"Test positivity remains high in eastern WA and has recently been rising in western WA, reflecting the continued growth of the epidemic independent of changes in testing volume. As a result, we recommend caution when interpreting downwards or flattening trends in recent cases in some counties [sic]," the report said.

Daily deaths across Western Washington also increased for the first time since March, the Washington State Department of Health said in the report. In Eastern Washington, the trend of increasing deaths continued.
